If you are looking for advice on chemical maintenance, please read the below information:
Importance of water treatment
It is of great importance that you regularly monitor and appropriately treat the water in your CleverSpa®. To maximise your enjoyment of the hot tub and to extend the life of the water, it is important to understand the risks and complications that can occur from poor water hygiene.
Never use your hot tub without first testing the water.
Hot tubs can harbour bacteria when not treated correctly. The most common form of bacteria is Legionella which can lead to Legionnaires’ disease.
These risks can increase with the age of the user, but some people are naturally a higher risk. For example:
- People over 45 years of age.
- Smokers and heavy drinkers.
- Those suffering from:
- Chronic respiratory disease.
- Kidney disease.
- Diabetes.
- Lung disease.
- Heart disease.
- Impaired immune systems.
How and when to shock your CleverSpa®.
For first time use and to keep your water clean and safe, you will need to shock your CleverSpa® on occasion. This needs to be done:
- The first time you fill up your hot tub. Every time you refill your hot tub.
- If the water turns a different colour or looks cloudy.
- If the water smells.
- If there is any sign of slime or algae.
- If foam appears.
- If there has been an accident (urine).
- After heavy use eg:
- Used 4-5 times a week – Shock weekly.
- Used occasionally – Shock every 2-3 weeks.
How to shock your inflatable hot tub
- Use chlorine granules (multi tabs cannot be used to shock, as these dissolve too slowly).
- Shock overnight, as you need to wait 24 hours before using.
- Add the recommended amount of chlorine to water (NEVER add water to chemicals), using a mixing jug.
- Turn on the air jets then add the dissolved chlorine from the jug.
- Keep the cover off to allow the air to circulate, ensuring the chlorine is not overpowering. Keep the air jets on for approx. 1 hour, then switch off.
- Put the cover back on and leave overnight.
- Check the chlorine level to ensure it’s in the range of 1-3 parts per million (ppm).
- Once in this range, the hot tub is safe to use.
Legionnaires' disease: How do people get it?
People contract Legionnaires’ disease by inhaling small droplets of water (called aerosols), which are suspended in the air and contain the bacteria. Certain conditions increase the risk from Legionella if:
- The water temperature in all or some parts of the system is between 20-45°C, which is suitable for the growth of the bacteria.
- It is possible for breathable water droplets to be created and water is stored and/or re-circulated. There are deposits that can support bacterial growth providing a source of nutrients for the organism e.g. rust, sludge, scale, organic matter and biofilms (from the body).
Please Read Carefully
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
- The water treatment chemicals that you add to your hot tub are highly concentrated. NEVER MIX CHEMICALS TOGETHER. Some chemicals, when mixed, can cause poisonous gases or even explosions.
- Before adding any chemicals to your hot tub, always read the instructions on the label.
- Always add chemicals to water, not water to chemicals.
- Always rinse the container after use.
- Only when the contents have fully dissolved should they be added to your hot tub. The temperature of the water must be above 20 degrees for the chlorine to work.
- When adding chemicals to your hot tub ensure the water is being circulated by the pump.
- Do not treat/dose your hot tub while it is occupied and always read the instructions before use.
- When draining and refilling your hot tub, always clean and flush out stagnant water before refilling.
- Change your filter every 168 hours (7 days) of heating & filtering the water. For weekend use only (Fri – Sun) the CleverSpa® filter should be changed every 2 weeks.
- Handle chemicals carefully, in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors and always wash hands thoroughly after use.
- Store chemicals in a secure, cool, dry place.
Useful information
- To keep your CleverSpa® in pristine condition, always use the correct chemicals and regularly change your filters. Additionally, ensure the hot tub water is changed frequently, especially when used often.
- Always use hot tub suitable products when cleaning, since household cleaners often contain phosphates that nurture algae growth or detergents that cause foam.
- Whilst CleverSpa® chemicals have been designed with the CleverSpa® hot tubs in mind, they may also be suitable for other types of hot tub water treatment (please check with the hot tub manufacturer).
- It is essential to keep your hot tub water hygienic and free of water-borne diseases like Legionella, by treating it with the correct chemicals and regularly changing your filters, regardless of how long or how frequently you use your hot tub.
- Correct water treatment will ensure the safety of hot tub bathers, reduce how often you have to replace the water and also prolong the lifespan of your pump.
- To reduce foaming on the surface of the spa water, it is ideal to shower before entering the spa, this will help to remove any lotions or oils on the skin.
